Pre-retirement Course
Introduction
Many look forward to retirement, when they can do all the things they do not have time to do whilst working. Some dread it! If their life is wrapped up in work and they have no hobbies, they wonder what they will do with themselves.
For clergy, and especially those who have been in full-time ministry for many years, retirement can also mean a loss of identity. Some will be very happy to retire and hang up their clerical collars. Others will want to continue to assist parish clergy. Indeed the Church of England would be in a very difficult position without the commitment of active, retired clergy.
Those approaching retirement will have to face practical and personal issues.
The programme
Each Year the Eastern Regional group of CME Advisers (Chelmsford, Ely, Norwich, Peterborough, St Albans and St Edmundsbury and Ipswich) organize a co
nference for those preparing for retirement. This residential event is designed to look at the more personal ones around the question: ‘What do I hope for in retirement?’
We want to tailor-make this event as much as possible. So those who accept an invitation are asked to let us know what personal and pastoral concerns are uppermost in their mind and we try to include them in the programme.
The programme includes a mixture of large and small group sessions and input provided by members of the Regional CME Advisers group and others.
It will probably benefit you if, before coming, participants have spent some time, with the spouse if appropriate, to ask these questions:
What am I looking forward to about retirement?
What am I not looking forward to?
