Design Awards Scheme
The Design Awards Scheme is organised in conjunction with English Heritage and the Friends of Essex Churches to recognise excellence in design and craftsmanship, and to encourage the commissioning of individual designs rather than resorting to standard catalogue items.
The scheme applies to everything which requires faculty consent, from small items such as candlesticks and light fittings, to stained glass, memorials, sculpture, paintings, furniture, etc., through to reordering schemes, whole building developments, cremated-remains areas in churchyards, or tree-planting projects. Neither the scale nor the cost of the work is important, and inner-city, suburban, rural and town-centre churches have equal chance of success within the scheme.
The awards, which are made every two years, take the form of a certificate presented by the Bishop of Chelmsford at Diocesan Synod. The number of awards made is at the discretion of the judges.
Awards have now been made in 2007, for work carried out in 2005 and 2006.
The next awards will be made in 2009, for work carried out in 2007 and 2008.
