2011 is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible

In 2010 a motion was presented to General Synod, the C of E's parliament, on behalf of Chelmsford Diocese, calling on the Synod to express its confidence in the Bible and to encourage the Church to use 2011 to promote Bible literacy within the Church and society as a whole. After friendly amendment the Synod passed the motion wholeheartedly.

Bishop of Chelmsford contributes to "The People's Bible"

As part of the celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, the Bishop of Chelmsford, Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell, has contributed to the creation of The People’s Bible when the road show came to Chelmsford on June 23 as part of this year's celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Bishop Stephen visited the People's Bible station inside Chelmsford's central library, and wrote two verses, Genesis Chapter 28 verses 19 and 20, for the unique electronic version of the Bible at the specially-built iPad writing stations. Bishop Stephen said: "Centuries ago the Bible was chained in churches and written in a language no one could understand. The King James Bible gave the scriptures back to the people. The People's Bible is doing that again today."

Bishop Stephen was also joined by Rt Revd Christopher Morgan, Bishop of Colchester, and Venerable Martin Webster, Archdeacon of Harlow, who also wrote verses for the People's Bible. The event organised by the Bible Society is touring the UK until November and will produce a new digitally handwritten version of the Bible full of personalised contributions from members ofthe public. There will also be an online archive of all the written verses. The aim of the road show is to reconnect the British public with the Bible.

Bishop says the Bible is ‘To be continued…’

Bishop Stephen has said that the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible is not just an important cultural event. The Bible is vital and central because it is God’s word, not faxed down from heaven, but inspired by the Spirit.

The reason we are celebrating this Year of the Bible and we are encouraging people to open their Bibles, he says, is that the Bible enables us to meet with God and to know God.  The Bishop suggests making a simple addition to the Bible, right at the very end: ‘To be continued  until that great day when we see the Lord face to face.’ What was revolutionary about the King James Bible 400 years ago was that it put the scriptures into everyday language and into the ears and hearts and hands of ordinary people. That is also the challenge for us today, says the Bishop.
