Personal Chaplain to the Bishop of Bradwell

The Reverend Christopher Mann

I am Personal Chaplain to the Bishop of Bradwell and a member of the Area Team with particular responsibility for communications.

Before taking up this appointment in 2006, I have been Rector of Upminster, in the Barking Episcopal Area, for ten years (1996-2006), a Minor Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral (1989-96) and Assistant Curate in the South-East Worcester Team Ministry (1986-89). I trained for the ordained ministry at Westcott House in
Cambridge (1983-86).

In 1979 I graduated from Glasgow University with a BSc degree in Topographic Science and worked as a Land Surveyor in pipeline construction for four years with British Gas.

Working with the Bishop

As Bishop’s Chaplain, I enhance the work of the Area Team as an expression of the Bishop’s ministry by being an effective channel of communication between the two. I am the first port of call for enquiries and play a specific role with parishes in vacancy.

The Appointments Process

I play a specific administrative role with parishes during a vacancy.

With the Bishop and Archdeacon I attend the informal meeting of the PCC that precedes the process of making a new appointment. I can be consulted over the drawing up the Parish Profile, and I am available at any point in the process to meet with the parish representatives to work out the best way to proceed. I administer the process whereby potential candidates find out about the parish, visit the parish and meet with the parish representatives.

I may also be consulted by clergy considering a move.

Working with the Team

I am Communications Adviser for the Area Team. It is part of my role to facilitate good communication within the Team as well as between the Team and the parishes and clergy of the Episcopal Area.

I am responsible for the management and development of the Bradwell pages of the Diocesan web site.

Enquiries

I work from the Bishop’s office (during office hours) alongside the Bishop’s Secretary. If you need to speak to or meet with Bishop Laurie we can facilitate this. I can also offer advice if you are not sure who you should be talking with, and I can put you in touch with the member of the Area Team who will be most able to help you. I can also put you in touch with different people across the Diocese and beyond.
