Bradwell Area Fact Sheet

  • Coryton Oil RefineryThe Bradwell Episcopal Area is a wide and varied area north of the River Thames, made up of towns, countryside and coast.
  • It covers the area from the Dartford Crossing to Southend in the east and Maldon and Chelmsford to the north.
  • Within Bradwell's boundaries are some 161 parishes and 186 church buildings.
  • Bradwell has nine deaneries:  Brentwood, Basildon, Chelmsford North, Chelmsford South, Maldon & Dengie, Hadleigh, Southend, Thurrock and Rochford’ and link to the site from Chelmsford South.
  • The buildings include the chapel built by St Cedd in 654 AD at Bradwell-on-Sea.
  • The Bradwell Area includes Chelmsford, the county town of Essex, Southend-on-Sea, the largest urban connurbation in Essex, Brentwood, Basildon, Thurrock and Tilbury Docks.
  • These are heavily urbanized areas of all types.
  • The population is 919,096 (2001 Census).
  • Thurrock, Southend, Basildon, Castle Point and Rochford are part of the Thames Gateway, which has been designated as a national priority area for urban regeneration.
  • Bradwell is served by the Bishop of Bradwell who lives to the south-west of Basildon in the village of Horndon-on-the-Hill, and by the Archdeacon of Southend who lives in Chelmsford.
