Christian giving
Donations
The pace of change in society has quickened dramatically in the last decade. In an era of escalating costs and reduced government funding the Church of England competes with the enormous demands that the modern world places on people’s time and money.
Our churches are pressing ahead with major programmes of modernisation, while holding on firmly to our historic vocation to serve the people of Essex and East London. Upholding the standards of the past in a modern context costs large sums of money. In the financial year 2004, Government funding represented just 9% of our annual receipts. Year after year we strive to match or expenditure to our income. At the same time, we must ensure that we have enough trained ministers and we properly resource their work.
Christians regard the effective use of time, skills, income and assets (called ‘stewardship’) as a vital part of being a disciple of Jesus, and the Church owes an immense amount to the generosity of our people in times past and present. Now we are at a crucial stage when we must not only sustain our inheritance but also enhance it.
We hope that whether you are a churchgoer or a friend, you will be interested in supporting our work. Please support us by downloading and returning a donation form.
Christian Giving Strategy
Chelmsford Diocese approved a strategy for Christian giving in March 2008. The aim of the strategy is to liberate the gifts of faithful people to resource God's mission through the churches of the diocese.
Further information
The long standing target for individual giving to the Church set by General Synod (the national assembly of the Church of England) is 5 per cent of personal income. The Bible teaches that we should give a tenth of our income (a ‘tithe’).
According to national statistics for 2004 the Diocese of Chelmsford achieves a level of giving of about 3 per cent. The Diocese benefits from the Church of England’s policy of mutual support.
