Church Membership - Occupation & Gender

In the last two issues I’ve drawn on the results of a voluntary survey of electoral roll members carried out back in 2002 and 2003. This is a useful source of information and undoubtedly we shall return to it on future occasions. So far we have established that 2/3rds of our members are female and 1/3rd male, and that 55% of members are over 60. This month we’ll look at what 4,100 respondents said about their occupations.

A 3-dimensional graph gives a better illustration than a table of numbers or percentages.

Occupation and gender

Firstly, this shows that retired people make up just over half our membership, with twice as many females as males.  Secondly, that slightly more than a third of our members are in work; two-thirds of these in full-time and one-third in part-time occupations, with males more prominent in full-time occupations (60%) and females much more prominent in part-time occupations (85%).  Thirdly, amongst full-time students and the unemployed, who together make up just 3% of our membership, the proportion of males and females was nearly equal, and finally, that 8% of our members described themselves as homemakers with few of these being male.

We hope parishes will find these results helpful to compare with their own memberships.
