Invest in your community with the Church Urban Fund
The economic downturn is hitting people hardest who were already living with deprivation. Chelmsford Diocese is working with the Church Urban Fund to challenge deprivation and restore dignity to deprived communities in Essex and East London.
The Church Urban Fund (or 'CUF') is the Christian charity which helps deprived communities wherever they are found. Deprivation sits cheek by jowl with wealth in urban and rural areas alike. CUF benefits both. While deprivation is most widespread in East London, the deepest pockets of deprivation are in rural Essex and on the coast.
CUF has supported more than 190 projects in Chelmsford Diocese in the last 20 years and has given about £2.5m in grants. This benefit has been based on an initial investment of £890,000 in CUF by people and their churches in the diocese. The secret of CUF's success is its track record in attracting funds from other sources. Every £1 that CUF gives is matched by an average of £8 from other bodies. The total benefit to Essex and East London communities has been more than £1m a year.
