A day colloquium on canons, catalogues, and cranks addressing the question of who or what decides what we know.
This colloquium asks a simple question: who or what intervenes in that which we think we know? The question can be answered from the highest level (divine guidance) to the lowest (fraud). Across a range of cultural topics, the colloquium investigates a few answers. We move from the formation of the canon of the Christian scriptures in the 4th and 5th centuries; from the difference between a published novel and how it began; to the experience of music when we do not know its composer or have mistaken, or been misled about, its authorship; from the role of saints for whom there is no real evidence to the more general question of the place of others’ decisions about the forces that shape what is, or looks like, knowledge.
