Give us this day our daily bread
Kenya
Many of us pray for the day when all who are hungry will be satisfied; when all who need bread would be able to produce it. Sadly, there are many in this world who die because of a lack of basic food and the means to develop what little land they have.
Hand in Hand is a Christian development agency, based in Chelmsford, which responds to the needs and problems caused by poverty and injustice overseas. Working in partnership with overseas organisations, poor communities are given opportunities to grow and prosper.
In Kenya, Hand in Hand works in partnership with Planting Faith to help poor farmers get the training, equipment and start-up materials they need to plant, grow and harvest crops for local and foreign markets so they can become self sufficient.
In Kenya, more than 70 per cent of the population work in agriculture and half of them live on US$1 (49p) a day. Most are subsistence farmers living from season to season only on what they can produce. In an average year, more than two million people need food aid.
When drought strikes the consequences are devastating. Walking miles for water is common and people starve. Our support can help build irrigation systems, train Kenyan farmers in agricultural techniques and running a small business, and finance sustainable agricultural projects. With our help, the current work in the Diocese of Thika will be extended to other dioceses in Kenya.
