Need help using our site?

We have tried to create a web site that is full of useful information, yet easy to use.  However, if you are having problems using the site, here are some frequently asked questions and their answers.

Navigating

Global links

There are a number of links that you will find on every page, regardless of which page you are looking at.  These are displayed in the menu bar above and give access to pages relating to the site itself rather than its content.

Pages in this folder

In the small grey box to the left of each page is a list of pages relating to the one currently being viewed.  If the current page is a folder, i.e. with other pages underneath it hierarchically, those 'child' pages will be listed.  If the current page is not a folder then the list will show other pages that are in the same folder as the current page.

Breadcrumbs

This is the line of links in the top right of each page showing the route from the current page back to the home page.  This is not necessarily the route you took to get to the page, but rather the direct route home.  This can be useful for going back to previous folders along the chain.

Finding things

Searching

Clicking the 'Search' button in the top menu bar will take you to a search page where you can search for information from the whole site.  If your browser has Javascript enabled this will show the results as you type and will highlight the results on both the results page and on subsequent pages navigated to through the search, so you can easily find where that information is on the page.

Site map

The site map will show all* the pages on the web site, so you can choose from that expanded list.  This can be useful if you know that the page you want is several levels down and you want to quickly go straight to it.

*Some pages cannot be listed in the site map, such as news articles, since there are so many of them and displaying them all would take up a lot of space on the page.  However, all those news articles are listed on the News page.

Finding people

If you are looking for contact information for someone working at the Diocesan Office, the Who's Who page gives a list of people and their job descriptions, along with a link to their e-mail address.  Alternatively you can contact the office direct and ask someone to put you in touch with the right person.

For contact information for clergy and others who work in churches in the diocese, search our online database - DirectoryOnline - which is an online version of the Diocesan Directory.

The Contact Finder page also gives contact information for other organisations, departments and groups of people connected to the Church.

Changing the way you view the site

Changing the text size

Almost all web browsers allow you to change the size of the text.  For example, in Internet Explorer 6 go to View > Text Size and choose from one of the options there.  Internet Explorer 7 has a magnification tool in the bottom right corner of the window which allows you to scale the entire contents of the page.  Firefox and Opera are alternative browsers you might like to try, both of which offer superb scaling options.

Hiding images and turning off Javascript

We appreciate that not everyone has super-fast broadband connections.  Choosing not to download graphics may significantly reduce the amount of time taken to load pages, and although the page will not look quite as attractive you may find it more responsive and quicker to navigate through.  You can normally turn images off in your browser preferences - in IE7 you'll find it under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Show pictures, and in Firefox under Tools > Options > Content > Load images automatically.

It is also understood that not everyone has a super-fast computer, and running Javascript on web sites can sometimes make older computers run slower or even make them grind to a halt.  Again, in your browser preferences you should find options to turn off Javascript.  Our site does not rely on Javascript for any key components, so you should still be able to use the web site effectively.

What is RSS, and can I use it?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way of keeping up to date with news and updates.  If you have an RSS Reader you can sign up to an RSS Feed and be notified of news articles and read them however you want.  We have an RSS Feed set up on our News articles, so if you want to stay up to date with what's going on in the Diocese this may be a convenient way of doing so.
