In the mountains of western Honduras, OCDIH, supported by Christian Aid, is helping families improve their lives and protect the forests around them. Simple steps are making a big difference to these children’s lives.

Eleven-year-old Jerzon is very pleased with his family’s new efficient stove, which uses 70 per cent less firewood than their previous one. He now only has to collect wood every three or four days, instead of daily – which gives him more time for football! Up to a quarter of infant deaths in developing countries are caused by pneumonia, mainly the result of smoke inhalation from cooking fires. Jerzon and his sister Ana had respiratory problems when they were younger but, thanks to their new stove, with its proper chimney, Jerzon’s youngest sister Carmen has never had problems.

Jerzon is one of many in his community who have learned new and organic crop techniques, and he has put himself in charge of the family’s garden, growing food such as cucumbers, carrots, oranges and radishes.

Jerzon’s faith is very direct: ‘When we go to church I thank God for the fact we’ve all lived to see another day.’ With our support through the appeal, children like Jerzon will have even more to thank God for in the future.
