Diocese to promote Fairtrade

The Diocese of Chelmsford has endorsed the principle of becoming a Fairtrade diocese.

The Fairtrade Foundation was set up in 1986 with a simple idea for the manufacturers of tea and coffee to pay a fair price to the growers of the raw materials. If they do so, they can be given permission to use the Fairtrade logo.

Many churches have already achieved Fairtrade status. If a church commits to using only Fairtrade tea and coffee and the church council has passed a resolution to do so, the church can achieve Fairtrade status.

If enough parishes in the diocese achieve Fairtrade status, the diocese can be awarded Fairtrade status.

The Diocese will now promote the principles and practice of Fairtrade, encourage parishes to address the issue and keep up to date, and coordinate accreditations from the parishes. The Diocese has committed itself to serving only Fairtrade tea and coffee at diocesan meetings and activities.
