IN a world where war and acts of terrorism are too often inspired by religious motives, how can members of different faiths argue together in public?
This most urgent of issues will be the subject of this year's Keene Lectures, which are to be delivered by Dr Nicholas Adams, inset left, under the title 'The Faith Agenda'.
Nick Adams is Senior Lecturer in Theology and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh and acting director of the Cambridge Inter-faith Programme - standing in for Professor David Ford. He is a leading member of a new generation of scholars who are bringing bright intelligence and fresh energy to the challenges of our day.
Introducing this year's lectures, Canon Andrew Knowles says: "I hope it will be a refreshing change to have our three lectures delivered by the same person. It will give the opportunity to get to know the lecturer a little and to allow him to develop his arguments more fully.
"Nick Adams is an engaging character who brings big ideas to life. He has a dynamic approach to the challenges of a
multi-faith society, which I would describe as both sensitive and forthright."
The Keene Lectures are public lectures on subjects of general social and theological interest. They are named after John Henry Keene, a distinguished citizen of Chelmsford, whose widow established a fund in his memory so that the lectures can be free of charge and open to all who are interested.
The Keene Lectures 2009- 'The Faith Agenda': Dr Nicholas Adams are: Wednesday November 11: 'Thinking historically'; Wednesday November 18: 'Counting to three'; Wednesday November 25: 'Arguing well'
In the Cathedral at 8pm with retiring collection.
