Vocation - £10.99
Stephen Platten
A book which explores Christian vocation.
There is particular support for those considering whether they should offer themselves as candidates for the ordained priesthood, the diaconate or some other formal ministry. It begins with a vision of the Christian life and of Christian ministry rather than simply a technical discussion of the theological roots of ministry and vocation. It explores aspects of the theology of ministry, but it starts from experience of the world.
The last book to do this in a really visionary way was Archbishop Michael Ramsey's The Christian Priest Today. That book remains a classic and is effectively irreplaceable. Some of the key elements of the context of that vision have changed in the past forty years and so the assumption behind this present book is that there is now more to be said.
The book addresses ordained ministry as its main focus, though it touches on the ministry of readers and religious orders.
Living In Two Kingdoms - £7.99
David Adam
Encouragement to be gained from reflecting that we can, even now, enjoy living in the kingdom of God!
'As a youngster,' writes David Adam, 'I always wanted to know more. I liked to climb the next hill and look around the next corner. My mother said I wanted to see the 'back of beyond'. I was never quite sure what she meant but I was often aware of an otherness in the midst of what was plainly in view.'
Both visionary and engagingly down-to-earth, Living in Two Kingdoms helps us recognise that the visible world of matter and the invisible world of spirit are not two worlds but one. We can be sure that whatever harsh reality we may have to face from time to time, the true reality is that we are never on our own. Because here and now - whatever it may feel like, we are truly part of the Kingdom of God!
Christianity Climate Change And Sustainable Living - £9.99
Nick Spencer & Robert White
This book offers guidance and information on how you can make a difference - as an individual, a church member and a campaigner.
Levels and patterns of consumption and production in the West have reached a level that cannot be maintained.
The way we live, and in particular the way we produce and use energy, is no longer environmentally sustainable: it is already threatening the health and well-being of both planet and people. An estimated 150,000 people per year die as a direct result of anthropogenic climate change, and they are disproportionately in the low-income countries. Our activities and the policies that shape them need to change. This book, which is the first serious Christian engagement with the emerging issue of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), analyses the scientific, sociological, economic and theological thinking that makes a Christian response to these trends imperative, before moving on to a practical conclusion that explores what Christians, church fellowships and the Church can do and campaign about.
The Book Of Mary - £10.99
Nicola Slee
A collection of poems, prayers and liturgical material, focused around the figure of Mary, and the themes of motherhood, sisterhood and female faith.
It has a strong contemporary feel: clearly feminist, it affirms the significance of Mary in the faith journey of contemporary Christian (and other) women, and challenges and critiques traditional stereotypes of Mary.
Subjects covered include the sorrows of Mary, her defiance and resistance, sexuality, sensuality, aloneness, independence and freedom, companionship, sisterhood, friendship, priesthood, contemplation, prayer and silence, wisdom, learning and authority, faith, risk and daring.

Surprised By Hope - £12.99
Tom Wright
This is a lively and accessible book that will surprise and excite all who are interested in the meaning of life not only after death but before it.
What do Christians hope for? To leave this wicked world and go to 'heaven'? For the 'kingdom of God' to grow gradually on earth?
What do we mean by the 'resurrection of the body', and how does that fit with the popular image of sitting on clouds playing harps? And how does all this affect the way we live in the here and now?
Tom Wright, one of our leading theologians, addresses these questions in this provocative and wide-ranging new book. He outlines the present confusion about future hope in both church and world. Then, having explained why Christians believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus himself, he explores the biblical hope for 'new heavens and new earth', and shows how the 'second coming' of Jesus, and the eventual resurrection, belong within that larger picture, together with the intermediate hope for 'heaven'.
For many, including many Christians, all this will come as a great surprise. Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation - and if this has already begun in Jesus' resurrection - the church cannot stop at 'saving souls', but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for God's kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life.

Life Calling - £4.50
Robert Warren & Kate Bruce
Some people think that vocation is just for special people ... but God calls us all to live our lives shaped and directed by his call.
This Lent course explores the meaning of vocation for everyone in five sessions that include guidelines and full background notes for leaders, interactive activities, discussion starters, multi-media ideas and resources for worship.
The following is an extract from the Church Times dated 2/11/07:
Forget Advent and Christmas: prepare for Lent with a new spiritual guide entitled Life Calling, which uses excerpts from the film, Billy Elliot, writes Rachel Harden.
Christians are being encouraged to use sequences from the film, released in 2000 - which features a boy ballet dancer from a northern mining community - to help them think about their calling.
The guide, published this week, has been written by Canon Robert Warren, The Church of England's former national adviser on evangelism, and the Revd Kate Bruce, a chaplain at the University of Durham.
Speaking on Tuesday, Canon Warren said that the film excerpts could provide interaction. 'The story is about someone fulfilling his life's calling ... Everyone has a sense of life calling, and the course is designed to help people make sense of it, within a Christian context. The emphasis is very much on people's everyday life: it is not about specific vocations or calling like becoming a priest'.
Each of the five weekly sessions is 90 minutes long, and includes Bible readings and meditations, prayer time, and general discussions. It also encourages participants to keep a reflective journal.

Including full notes for facilitators, this offers an engaging and original resource for Lent.
Thirst For Life - £4.95
CAFOD
A well-established Lent book, now in its eleventh year.
As these reflections on the church's chosen readings for Lent show, our preparation for Easter shadows the wilderness experience of Jesus. For Christians, this was the moment when the whole of creation was poised between two futures. Lent was the time when candidates for baptism prepared themselves to change their lives forever. And it is also a special time of expectancy, reflection and making choices. We ask ourselves, Who do we want to be? What values are we to live by? What do we hope for? Who we are to follow?
Thirst for Life invites us to draw closer to God not only through prayer and contemplation but through the renewal of our lives and the transformation of the world.
