Join the Bishop on the road to Becontree!
26th Apr 2018
Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, is inviting the people of Redbridge and Dagenham to join him on his next Missionary Journey when he leads a walk from Barkingside to Becontree in May.
“A Missionary Journey is a chance to slow down, take life at a gentle pace and enjoy a good chat,” said the Bishop.
“I am looking forward to chatting with people as we walk along together.
“For most people becoming a Christian is like a journey. It is not a journey we make all at once or on our own but more like a walk we take step by step in the company of others.
“Christian people have always accompanied others on their way to faith just as Jesus accompanied Cleopas and his companion on the Emmaus Road in the Bible story.”
Bishop Stephen’s Missionary Journey takes place on Wednesday 23 May. It starts at Holy Trinity Church in Barkingside at 8.00 am with breakfast and ends at St Mary’s Church in Becontree at 3.00 pm with tea (8 miles). People are welcome to join the Bishop for all or part of the walk. The route can be viewed at the following link - https://bit.ly/2HP4UOv. More information is available from Nick Ellis, email: email@example.com.
Two further Missionary journeys will be taking place in 2018. On Thursday 5 July the destination will be Sheering via Harlow. For the third walk this year on Sunday 30 September plans are being made to carry produce from Essex farms and end the journey at Chelmsford Cathedral where a special Harvest Festival will be held as part of British Food Fortnight.
The Bishop’s Missionary Journeys are now in their fifth year. They started in 2014 as part of the centenary celebrations of Chelmsford Diocese. Since then the Bishop has led 25 walks and covered about 300 miles. In 2016 he spent four weeks on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in Spain along the Camino Way.
In his writings the Bishop has explored the inward and outward journeys that being a Christian involves. "The Pilgrim Way" booklet he recently co-authored is a guide to the core beliefs of the Christian faith in an easy to read, question and answer format. It is available from Church House Publishing.
