No Religion

Earlier this year we learned that according to the 2001 Census some 68% of the population in this diocese declared itself to be Christian. We also discovered that in 2006, on the first Sunday in October, 2.3% of these Christians were to be found in our parish churches and probably 9% overall in churches and chapels of all denominations. We’ve since noted that about half our members are over 60 and that the younger age groups seem to be under-represented.

We thought it might be illuminating to try to find out the age profile of those declaring themselves to be Christian back in 2001. When the analysis of the Census is complete, a number of tables are published which helpfully relate various Census measures together. Standard Table 149 gives sex and age by religion with a table for each electoral ward. The age groups are quite narrow so there is a lot of detail with perhaps the most interesting measure being the number declaring themselves to have “no religion”. To eliminate the influence of other faiths, we have excluded those parts of the diocese where other faiths are in large numbers. The result below is most revealing.
