THE Othona Christian community based at Bradwell-on-Sea has been awarded more than £100,000 by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).
The community was originally set up in 1946 to promote peace and reconciliation and now educates visitors and guests alike in sustainable living and renewable
technologies.
The main building at Othona, used as a meeting place and dormitory by hundreds of schoolchildren and visitors every year was in very poor condition, but by successfully entering EEDA's 'Cut Your Carbon' competition, the community has been awarded £103,000 to provide a new,
zero carbon-impact replacement.
The new building will be highly innovative and designed to be zerocarbon in operation, achieved through very high thermal mass and the use of glass to maximize passive solar gain.
‘Cut your Carbon' is a three-year campaign that aims to bring together communities in the East of England to tackle climate change. To find out more, visit www.cutyourcarbon.org.uk
