Parish Expenditure
When asking about parish expenditure the chances are that it will be the Parish Share or the building project which get the first mention. The interesting thing is that the routine costs of keeping a parish going week by week are just as significant and yet much less understood.
In March 2003, the Archdeacons produced a Review of Church Buildings and for this much effort was put into getting annual financial returns from parishes. A response rate of 92% was achieved for the report but since then has grown to 99.4%. These latest figures for 2001 show that almost £7.0 million had been spent on church building projects, £7.5 million on ordinary running costs and charitable giving, and a further £9.9 million on contributions to Parish Share. Ordinary running costs are clearly very significant, especially when we remember that most building projects will have been funded from capital reserves built up for the purpose and from one-off grants, appeals, insurance and the sales of fixed assets.
This pie chart gives the latest details of regular expenditure for 2007. They include both unrestricted and restricted expenditure but exclude trading and fund-raising costs. The total is £10,630,000 compared to the contributions made to Parish Share of £12,500,000. These costs are all met from the PCC income described in a similar pie chart last month.
