BRF is pleased to have completed the People’s Bible Commentary in 2006. We were delighted when the Archbishop of Canterbury recommended the PBC Commentary on St John’s Gospel by Richard Burridge as preparatory reading for the Lambeth Conference, due to take place in July 2008.
The Archbishop suggests reading John’s Gospel as the biblical focus for this gathering of Anglican bishops worldwide, which happens once every ten years. He describes the PBC John commentary as ‘one of the finest and most accessible of modern studies’.
The PBC Commentary on John’s Gospel is a combination of excellent, yet accessible scholarship with BRF’s expertise in daily Bible reading. Following recent developments in academic research on the gospels, it stresses the narrative of the Gospel, studying it section by section, rather than verse by verse. It is also designed for daily use with prayer and meditation.
Bible commentary for every day
Richard A Burridge
John's Gospel is often given to people as a readable account of Jesus of Nazareth, yet it is also a sublime masterpiece that has occupied theologians and mystics for centuries.
It has been described as 'a book in which a child may paddle but an elephant can swim deep'. At the same time, however, it is still a story - the story of Jesus' deeds and words, his signs and teaching, and how these led to his arrest, death and resurrection.
By following the flow of John's narrative, and showing how it is patterned and devised, this commentary unpacks the text to help the reader grow in understanding and faith.
