Reader CME
Providing a coherent CME programme specifically for Readers is a relatively new initiative within the Diocese of Chelmsford. There are three main strands to Reader CME.
1. Newly-licensed Readers receive CME alongside newly-ordained Deacons in their first year. The combined programme covers the areas of (a) work with children, (b) funeral and bereavement ministry, and (c) preaching. Details of these training days can be found here.
2. Each year the Diocese puts on a training day to which all Readers are invited. The focus of the days varies from year to year. Topics in the past have included:
a quiet retreat led by The Revd Alison White, CME officer from the Diocese of Peterborough;
a day with The Revd Canon George Kovoor, principal of Trinity College, Bristol on Cross Cultural Communication of the Gospel; and
a day on the theme of leadership with our own Canon Pat Nappin and The Revd Canon Roger Matthews.
Another CME day, scheduled for early summer 2008, is at the planning stage.
3. Readers receive the same grants as clergy. These can be used for training, courses or retreats. Readers may contact their Area CME Adviser to discuss the use of these grants. More information can be found here.
Finally, it is hoped that the LARC groups (Local Advisers for Readers in Chelmsford) will act as opportunities for mutual support and encouragement. As CME officer with responsibility for Reader CME, Tim Bull is always delighted to attend these groups, either for a general chat or to provide specific input or training. All three Area CME Advisers are also willing to help LARCs and Readers in any way. Please be in touch if we can assist.
