Social engagement

Jesus Christ gave two commandments: to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to love your neighbour as yourself.

Christian churches are concerned for the well-being of each person and the well-being of the community as a whole. Love of God and care for neighbours go together. They shape lives and communities.

Chelmsford Diocese upholds ‘Five Marks of Mission’. These are to:

  1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom.
  2. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers.
  3. To respond to human need by loving service.
  4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society.
  5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the earth.

Three of these marks are concerned with the wider social context.
