Early Christians' experience of living in a non-Christian culture

Saturday 23rd February 2008

Early Christian writings, both within the New Testament and outside, show that the relationship between Christianity and its surrounding cultures was a subject of great importance in the development of early Christian life and thought. Starting from its earliest context in Palestinian Judaism, Christianity rapidly found itself in dialogue and competition with Greco-Roman religion, philosophy, and literary culture. Even in the late fourth century, when Christianity had become a privileged religion in the Roman empire, it continued to be strongly influenced by the prestige of the classical tradition. This study day will explore some of the inter-cultural relationships with affected early Christianity and reveal attitudes which, like much in the history of the early Church, are still of contemporary interest.
