Unemployment

Chelmsford Diocese offers an active ministry to all those who are unemployed, and to their families and communities.

In response to the recession, a conference called ‘Unemployment - What can we do?’ was held at Emmanuel Church in Billericay in March 2009. Read the following speech from the conference:

According to the official labour market statistics, published by nomis, the Office for National Statistics, unemployment in Essex increased by more than 100% in all age categories between July 2008 and July 2009.

The statistics on claimants for Jobseeker's Allowance in Essex for July 2008 and for July 2009 are as follows:

However, the Jobseeker's Allowance figures do not provide a total picture of unemployment. The international standard includes other groups on other benefits - incapacity, lone parents and those on income-related benefits. As well as this there are young people aged 16-18 and those who choose not to claim the Jobseeker's Allowance.
