Transforming the communities of Essex & East London through Christ’s presence

Priest in Charge of Bradwell-on-Sea, Dengie and Asheldham, St Lawrence Newland and Tillingham

The Joint Benefices, of Bradwell and St Lawrence and of Tillingham and Dengie, have agreed to work together and explore the possibility of becoming a United Benefice in the future. We are, therefore, appointing a full time priest-in-charge across the benefices, rather than, as in the recent past, two part-time House for Duty priests. So the first task will be to look at ways in which everyone can work together to develop the mission God has given us and that each of the churches can flourish The benefices also contain the ancient chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, build by St Cedd in AD645. The chapel is under the oversight of Chelmsford Cathedral, with its own ordained Chaplain who is a member of the local ministry team

The parishes are contiguous with each other, and located in the north-eastern corner of the Dengie Hundred on the east coast of Essex. The area retains much of its rural character with a degree of seclusion granted by the River Blackwater forming its northern boundary, the North Sea to the east and the River Crouch flowing along the southern limit of the peninsular. The area remains principally devoted to farming, however with the branch line from Southminster just a few miles to the south, many people commute from the area daily into London

Our congregations include people from a varied denominational background and our style of worship attempts to take account of this eclecticism. We need an incumbent who can provide a ministry where all can be refreshed within the wide worshipping community

All five of the parishes produced a survey of 10 questions to ask ‘what qualities’ parishioners would like their new priest to have and the top three most popular were:

  •    Schools (works closely with our local schools)
  •    Community (bringing church and community closer)
  •    Visiting; (those in need of support)

Therefore, we seek an energetic and dedicated priest who can:

  • Work with the two church primary schools and with existing groups and projects that have been started in the parishes.
  • Reach out in pastoral care and engage with people of all ages, being warm, compassionate and ready to listen to those whom he or she meets, both inside and outside the church congregations.
  • Inspire confidence to reach out to the communities, helping to unify any divided communities and groups and further develop the spiritual life of the parishes.
  • Be a team builder who feels comfortable within the church and the community, discerning and developing the gifts and abilities of the laity
