Workshop opportunities for all throughout the year

MAY: Everyone can sing!

A workshop showing how singing can be the means by which our spirits are lifted up to God, whatever our musical skills (or lack of them), so come prepared to try it for yourself. Laurie and Brigid have a lot of experience in getting people to sing and will demonstrate how it can be done locally, especially in smaller gatherings. The session will be held on a Sunday afternoon and after tea will lead into an act of worship. Please bring something to share for tea.

Laurie and Brigid Main, Sunday 18 May, 3.00pm – 7.30pm, St Mary the Virgin, West Bergholt

JUNE: Musical resources for small congregations/choirs

The Anglican liturgy is one of the jewels in our crown but often churches feel musically challenged. This workshop will look at the opportunities Common Worship provides and how we might get the best out of it with limited resources. It will also introduce us to new music/simple Eucharistic settings. The evening will finish with compline for a summer evening.

Rev Phillip Banks and Philip Prior, Monday 16 June, 7.30pm, St Peter’s, Coggeshall

JULY: Church outside the church

Where are the natural gathering places in our communities where ‘church’ might happen other than in church? And what is the ‘rightness’ of holding worship and other gatherings in secular venues? Come to Felsted and experience it for yourself: Mondays @ The Swan regularly attracts up to 40, meeting and eating together and discovering the Christian faith. Revd Colin Taylor will explore with us the theology of what church outside the building might mean as we enjoy a meal together.

1 July, The Swan, Felsted, 7.00pm. £15 to include dinner. Places limited to 35 so please book early

ANYTIME*: Leading Intercessions and Reading aloud in Church

*August might be good when there’s often a bit of slack in the parish programme

Two skills-based, confidence-building sessions for lay people. Numbers will be restricted to about 12 but the sessions can be run for individual parishes on request.

OCTOBER: Lift up your heads!

An opportunity to find out how churches are using multi-media to enhance worship and release congregations from books and paper. It will focus not so much on technical installations as the possibilities they open up and the resources available. Although St Margaret’s is a new church and well equipped, this workshop will be of equal interest to those of us who worship in ancient churches, more of which are exploring how laptops, screens and music systems can transform worship.

Revd Andrew Fordyce and others, St Margaret’s, Berechurch, Colchester
Thursday, 23 October, 7.30-9.30pm

SEPTEMBER: Worship for Everyone/Making the most of Festivals

CPAS Consultant, Kelly Betteridge, leading a day on All Age Worship and making the most of festivals.

Saturday 27 September, 10.00am-3.30pm, St Andrew’s, Mark’s Tey

The culmination of our year when as an Area we celebrate in our cathedral. Peter Moger, National Worship Development Officer, will lead a session and after tea there will be worship – which transforms!
