Worship
Eunice Eke, left, from Westcliff-on-Sea and Lucia Prinsloo from Southend won awards at the junior national finals of the 2008 Cranmer Awards, staged by the Prayer Book Society.
Worship of God is at the heart of the Church of England. The Church authorises a form of worship (or ‘liturgy’) which is intended to be as faithful and honouring to God as it is possible to make it.
There has been a long process of liturgical development:
- The Book of Common Prayer of 1662 (which itself was revised from 1549)
- Series I, Series II, and Series III in the 1960s
- The Alternative Service Book of 1980
- The Common Worship book series.
The final volume of Common Worship was published in March 2008.
The electronic text of the Book of Common Prayer is gradually being made available on the Church of England’s website at www.cofe.anglican.org/worship/liturgy/bcp
Texts from Common Worship are also available on the C of E’s website at www.cofe.anglican.org/worship/liturgy/commonworship/texts
A guide to using worship in church communities, called Worship Changes Lives, published by Church House Publishing, is available from the Chelmsford Resource Centre at the discount price of £4.49.
