Confirmation of Election of Bishop Stephen Cottrell as the 98th Archbishop of York to take place on 9 July 2020

20th May 2020

The Church of England have announced that Bishop Stephen Cottrell will be confirmed as the 98th Archbishop of York on 9 July in a service broadcast by video.

Bishop Stephen left his role as Bishop of Chelmsford on 12 April in order to take up the role of Archbishop of York following his nomination by Her Majesty the Queen in December 2019.

We thank Bishop Stephen for his huge contribution to our diocese and our prayers are with him and his wife Rebecca as they embark on their new ministry.

A prayer on the announcement of the Archbishop of York Designate

Generous God, we give you thanks:
you have heard our prayer,
guided your people
and raised up Stephen
to serve as the next Archbishop of York.
By your Holy Spirit, grant to him
good counsel, holy insight and
joy in the gospel,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
