Bishop Stephen welcomes women bishops approval
15th Jul 2014
Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, has warmly welcomed the final approval of the General Synod of the Church of England for women to become bishops in the Church.
“This is a great and momentous day for the Church of England," he said.
"Twenty years after the first women were ordained as priests we have passed legislation for women bishops.
“But I am delighted not just because this vote has gone through, but because the gracious tone and manner of the debate in which many Chelmsford people played a part, and the particular set of proposals General Synod has approved, mean that we continue to be a Church where all are welcome and where the views of the minority are heard.
“I now commit myself to ensuring that the principles that undergird these proposals and the joyful outcome they have led to become lived reality in our diocese.”
