Transforming the communities of Essex & East London through Christ’s presence

Chaplain will strengthen Pleshey as House of Prayer

19th Jan 2017

Revd Graham Dowling has been appointed as Chaplain of the Chelmsford Diocesan Retreat House at Pleshey in Essex.

The Retreat House, popularly known as Pleshey, is a place at the heart of Chelmsford Diocese that has offered people an opportunity to spend time deepening their relationship with God through prayer and reflection for the past century. Increasing numbers of people are now enjoying an attractive programme of events in refurbished accommodation as the Retreat House looks forward to the next 100 years.

Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, has said:

“I am delighted to be making this announcement. Graham will work for about a morning a week at Pleshey, supporting the life of the House, setting up a programme of daily prayer, and establishing a network of chaplains so that there can be spiritual support for all that the House does, and enable it to fulfil its vocation as a place of prayer and a spiritual resource for Essex, East London and further afield.”

This is a part-time appointment and Graham will remain as vicar of St Patrick’s in Barking.

 Bishop Stephen continued:

"Graham is a hard-working, resourceful, prayerful and imaginative priest. He is doing fantastic work in Barking, building up the life of the church there, and he will bring this experience to our Retreat House, helping it to fulfil its vocation and develop its life."

Stewart McCredie, the General Manager of the Retreat House, commented:

“As the House nears the completion of the re-development work, the addition of Graham to the team ensures that the spiritual life of the House also sees further development so that we truly are a House of Prayer and spiritual resource to the Diocese and beyond.”

 Graham added:

"This is an exciting challenge which I've been passionate about for some time and it's great being at the start of something new coming together. I'm looking forward to working closely with Stewart and the House team."

Graham will begin his new role towards the end of this month.
