Transforming the communities of Essex & East London through Christ’s presence

“Get out!” the new Dean of Chelmsford tells cathedral congregation

3rd Feb 2014

At his first service the new Dean of Chelmsford, the Very Revd Nicholas Henshall told a congregation in Chelmsford Cathedral to “Get out of here” in response to the mission of God - or in church language,

“Go in the peace of Christ”.

He explained that a church “is measured by the quality of its love in service for a world in need with faith as the active ingredient.”

“I’ve seen that faith as the active ingredient can genuinely transform lives, renew communities and change the world.”

Chelmsford Cathedral can make a contribution in the City of Chelmsford, the Diocese of Chelmsford (Church of England in Essex and East London) and in the region, he said.

“The core worshipping life of the Christian community” is “about meeting God face to face, being transformed by that encounter, and then being sent out to live it.”

He suggested a new flag for the cathedral – a towel:

“Towels are what churches and especially cathedrals should fly from their flag poles – because on the night before he died at supper with his friends Jesus took a towel and washed his disciples' feet, and then told them to do the same – love in action for a world in need, with faith as the active ingredient.”

The Dean was preaching at a special service of Collation, Induction and Installation as Dean of Chelmsford conducted by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell on 2 February 2014.

The lesson was read by the Dean’s wife, Christine and the gospel was read by the Edward Carter, Canon Theologian.

The Master of the Choristers, James Davy conducted the joint Cathedral choirs.

About 200 people from the Dean’s former parish, Christ Church on the Stray, Harrogate attended.
