Transforming the communities of Essex & East London through Christ’s presence

The Revd Canon Dr Chigor Chike announced as Archbishops’ Racial Justice Commission Member

7th Oct 2021

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have announced the names of the 11 Commission Members who have been appointed to the Racial Justice Commission, joining Lord Boateng whose Chairmanship of the Commission was announced on 9 July 2021.

One of the newly announced members of the Commission is the Revd Canon Dr Chigor Chike who is Vicar of Emmanuel Forest Gate and was formerly the Chair of the Chelmsford Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns and a member of the Chelmsford Diocese Racial Justice Task and Finish Group.

The Racial Justice Commission was appointed by the Archbishops in response to the Anti-racism Taskforce report, ‘From Lament to Action’, for a period of three years.

It follows a series of commitments by the Archbishops to take action to identify, respond to, and root out systemic racism in the Church of England.

The Commission is an independent body bringing together a range of experience and expertise within and beyond the church.

Members include specialists in areas such as Theology & Racial Justice; Ecclesiology & Liturgy; Formation & Theological Education and History & Politics.

Commenting on the announcement of the Commission members and Chigor Chike's appointment, the Bishop of Chelmsford, The Rt Revd Dr Guli Francis Dehqani said:

“The appointment of the racial justice commissioners is an important moment in the implementation of the anti-racism taskforce report, From Lament to Action. The commissioners will bring a huge range of experience, expertise and wisdom as the Church of England takes action to identify and tackle systemic racism. The Revd Canon Dr Chigor Chike has played a key role in our own work to identify and tackle racism in Chelmsford Diocese, as a parish priest, as the former Chair of the Chelmsford Diocese Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns and as a member of our Racial Justice Task and Finish Group.  I know he will make a hugely valuable contribution as an Archbishops' Commissioner".

The Bishop of Colchester and Chair of the Chelmsford Diocese Racial Justice Task and Finish Group, the Rt Revd Roger Morris said:

“I have worked closely with the Revd Canon Dr Chigor Chike in the development of the Chelmsford Diocese Racial Justice Task and Finish Group Report that will be published later this year and will set out the action we will take in our own diocese to identify and tackle racism in the church and in our communities in Essex and East London. Chigor will bring huge wisdom, experience and expertise to the role of Archbishops' Commissioner and I’m delighted to hear that he has been appointed”.
