Tribute to Derek Bond
25th Jul 2018
We are saddened to learn of the death of the Right Reverend Derek Bond, the former Bishop of Bradwell and an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Chelmsford.
Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, has paid tribute to Bishop Derek’s pastoral leadership:
Bishop Derek was easy to talk to, caring and hospitable. He will be remembered with great fondness by many people.
“May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
“Please join me in holding Valerie and the family in your prayers.”
Ordained in 1952, Derek Bond served as a curate in Friern Barnet and as a vicar in Harringay, Harrow Weald and Pebmarsh before being appointed Archdeacon of Colchester in 1972 and Area Bishop of Bradwell in 1976.
In his retirement he served as Honorary Assistant Bishop in Gloucester and Worcester Dioceses (1992-2006) and as Honorary Assistant Bishop in Chelmsford Diocese from 2007.
Derek Bond was the third Bishop of Bradwell in the Diocese of Chelmsford.
The sixth Bishop of Bradwell, Rt Revd John Perumbalath, was installed at Chelmsford Cathedral on 22 July 2018.
