Clergy & Licensed Ministers Face-to-Face Safeguarding Training Events

If you have never attended Face-to-Face Safeguarding training, or it has been more than three years since you last, or you completed this training within another Diocese, you are now required to attend a Clergy & Licensed Ministers Face-to-Face Safeguarding Training Event.

With reference to the advice given by the government in relation to Covid-19, we have taken the decision to cancel the Clergy & Licensed Ministers Face-to-Face Safeguarding Training, which were due to be held up until and including 18th June 2020.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, but our wish is to keep everyone as safe as possible.    The Clergy & Licensed Ministers Face-to-Face Safeguarding Training being held on Tuesday 30th June at Chapter House Chelmsford, is currently planned to go ahead, however we will continue to monitor the situation with Covid-19 to decide if this training event needs to be cancelled.

Please see below guidance from the National Safeguarding Team with regards to those who have not been able to undertake the appropriate safeguarding training due to Covid-19, in line with the due regard to the need for Safeguarding training:

‘We advise that dioceses cancel their face to face safeguarding training in line with government advice, and that this may cause a problem for some clergy and church officers who need to complete it. We are aware that the normal requirements mean that clergy and church officers are required to undertake various levels of training. People in roles which require C0 or C1 training will still be required to complete that training as usual using the online modules.’

‘Our advice to you (checked with legal colleagues) is that where a member of clergy or church officer has not been able to undertake the appropriate safeguarding training because of cancellations due to the virus, this constitutes a cogent reason why the House of Bishops guidance to have due regard to the need for safeguarding training to be completed for certain roles, has not been followed. In other words, it is acceptable for clergy to continue to minister and church officers to undertake their roles, if they have either not done the training or not completed further training within the required time period, due to the impact of the virus. Records should be kept of who this applies to, to demonstrate the cogent reason, and they should attend the training as soon as possible when available.'

Emails will be sent to those who are due to attend the training, once it has been confirmed by the Government and National Safeguarding Team that it is safe for social gatherings to reconvene and new dates and venues have been arranged.

In the meantime online Safeguarding training should still be undertaken for those who have not completed this within the last three years or require a refresher, please click on the below link: https://www.chelmsford.anglican.org/uploads-new/events/Updated_Guidelines_online_training_13.01_.19_.pdf
