HR Adviser

Location: Diocesan Office Chelmsford

£30,000 to £35,000 per annum, subject to experience.

Located at the Diocesan Office, New Street, Chelmsford, CM1 1AT

Full time (35 hours per week), with the opportunity for hybrid working and flexible working and requests for part time hours may be considered

Non-contributory company pension scheme and in-service life cover

25 days holiday, rising to 29 after 5 years’ service

The Role

The Church of England Diocese of Chelmsford is seeking to recruit a HR Adviser.  The HR Adviser role will focus on general HR matters relating to employees and clergy office holders, but will also assist the HR Manager to develop HR projects and policies to respond to the changing needs of the Diocese.  As part of an inclusive, friendly, and supportive small HR team, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply HR and legal knowledge, while furthering their HR experience in a unique environment.  You’ll need to build effective working relationships across Diocesan departments with a wide range of specialist colleagues and contribute to matters where HR overlaps exist. 

The Person

We are looking for a HR generalist, who is flexible, diplomatic, and detailed in their approach.

Ideally, you will have: -

  • Proven current experience as a HR generalist, including managing a range of HR and employee relations matters successfully.

  • Ability to provide policy advice and think through the implications of proposed policies from an HR perspective, bringing wisdom from experience

  • Ability to both grasp the big picture and engage at the detailed level, with a commitment to accuracy and quality assurance of own work

  • A professional qualification in HR and/or Associate CIPD level (highly desirable)

  • Experience of working in an environment where there is a diverse workforce not just employees, i.e. with office holders, managing and recruiting volunteers etc. (highly desirable)

The Diocese of Chelmsford is the Church of England across Essex and East London. The Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance (CDBF) is the company, and registered charity, that manages the financial affairs of the diocese as well as managing a property, education and safeguarding portfolio. We have nearly 600 churches, which are served by around 500 clergy, compromising of 350 stipendiary clergy and 150 self-supporting clergy; known as clergy office holders and governed by Clergy Terms of Service and Common Tenure legislation. There are around 90 staff in the CDBF (including our Retreat House, area offices and employed clergy); many CDBF Group staff work on a part time basis or have specific contractual arrangements.
