27 February 2023
On Sunday 26 February, people from across Chelmsford Diocese gathered at Chelmsford Cathedral to say farewell to The Right Revd John Perumbalath and to give thanks for everything he has contributed to the life of our Diocese, both as Archdeacon of Barking and more recently as Bishop of Bradwell.
During the service the congregation heard from Bishop John’s friends and colleagues from across the diocese, including those who he has worked with closely in the Bradwell Episcopal Area.
It was announced in October 2022 that Bishop John will become the ninth Bishop of Liverpool, succeeding The Right Revd Paul Bayes who retired last year.
Commenting on his announcement as the next Bishop of Liverpool in October 2022, Bishop John said:
I am delighted and humbled to have received this call to be the next Bishop of Liverpool. I have come to love Liverpool through my numerous visits when my daughter was in university here for six years. I look forward to becoming part of the vibrant and diverse communities served by the diocese of Liverpool.
“I am sad about leaving East London and Essex, and all the lovely people I have come to know and love. This is where I was formed as an Archdeacon and then a bishop. I will leave with gratitude and thankfulness for all the grace and love that we experienced together."
