Bishop Roger responds to Prime Minister’s announcement on Net Zero policies

22 September 2023

The Rt Revd Roger Morris, Bishop of Colchester and Chelmsford Diocese Lead for the Environment has issued a statement in response to the Government's announcement about Net Zero policies.

Bishop Roger said:

“Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to delay and dilute key environmental policies makes no sense economically and is dangerously shortsighted.

This summer has seen record temperatures, wildfires, flooding, and droughts - causing UN Secretary-General António Guterres to say that ‘climate breakdown has begun’. Scientists are agreed that this decade provides us with a tiny window of opportunity to mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change. It is clear that we have to speed up and not slow down our progress towards net zero.

Last month, the Prime Minister announced an expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling. Two weeks ago, the UK government failed to secure any new offshore windfarms due to the way that it had set the prices at the auction. Now we have this further rowing back on key climate pledges.

I urge him to rethink.”
