Choirs from across Essex and East London gathered for the Diocesan Choral Festival

19 May 2026

On Saturday 16 May, around 100 singers representing 15 different churches from across the Diocese gathered in Chelmsford Cathedral for the annual Diocesan Choral Festival.

The combined choirs rehearsed during the afternoon, preparing to sing music by Ayleward, Stanford and Vaughan Williams at Choral Evensong.

The service was led by the Rev'd Canon Sebastian Harries, the Cathedral Precentor. During the service, Royal School of Church Music Silver and Gold award winners were presented with their medals by the Ven. Christopher Burke, the Archdeacon of Barking.

Emma Gibbins, Chelmsford Cathedral’s Director of Music, said:

“The Diocesan Choral Festival was a joyful and uplifting occasion, celebrating choral singing in our Diocese. It was wonderful to bring together singers from across our churches to share in such a rich tradition of music and worship. We look forward to welcoming choirs again next year — save the date for the Diocesan Choral Festival 2027, which will take place on Saturday 15 May.”
