Prayers for the farming community

A reflection and prayer by the Rev Canon Janet Nicholls, Chelsmford Diocese Rural Adviser and Agricultural Chaplain

For many centuries our farmers have turned to their local church during times of crisis. Many of our rural parish churches stand as a beacon of the Christian faith in the countryside. Inside their walls, it is my prayer that our farmers sense the hope, care and support of a community of people, shaped by their faith in the God of Creation as expressed by Jesus Christ.

Fiscal changes proposed in the budget of 30th October 2024 are causing intense anxiety amongst farmers in the Diocese of Chelmsford. Many are describing the changes as an unparalleled threat to the future of ordinary family farms, the wellbeing of rural communities and the food security of our country. A large contingent of our farming community will be taking their voices (and foodbank donations) to central London tomorrow. Others will seek a listening ear and solace much closer to home. Some will turn to their local church, as their parents and grandparents did before them.

Farming is an occupation that already has one of the highest suicide rates. When agricultural and fiscal policy demolishes future hopes for farming families, the risk of suicide increases even further. Christian love expressed through unjudgmental listening, pastoral care and warm hospitality can be lifesaving. My thanks to all in our rural parishes who will continue to keep a beacon of hope alive for our farming communities during this current crisis.

May farmers be assured that our prayers are with them.

God of compassion, we rejoice in the unity that is at the heart of your creation.

Look upon those who work with your land; protect, inspire and strengthen them with your Spirit.

As we stand before you in prayer for all who are suffering, grant that your light may shine in their darkness, and that we may bear one another’s burdens and so fulfil your law of love.

This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
