Brightlingsea’s Blessing & Reclaiming of the Waters 2026
The Brightlingsea Blessing and Reclaiming of the Waters, a centuries-old tradition in the north Essex coastal town, took place on 14 June, bringing together residents, clergy and civic leaders to celebrate the town’s maritime heritage.
Part of the ancient Beating of the Bounds tradition, the event began with a reception at the local pub before the Town Crier officially opened proceedings at St James’ Church. Led by the Colchester Waits, a procession of mayors, clergy and community representatives then made its way to the waterfront.
At the Town Jetty, the Blessing of the Waters took place aboard historic fishing smacks. The Rt Revd Roger Morris, Bishop of Colchester, joined other ministers in blessing the water, boats and crews during a service led by the Revd Caroline Beckett, Vicar of All Saints with St James Church, Brightlingsea.
The traditional flotilla sailed Brightlingsea Creek. On departure, spectators lined the seafront, banging pans, ringing bells and shouting while those on board responded with horns, klaxons, bugles and bells.
The flotilla assembled near Bateman’s Tower, where prayers were offered and a willow cross was placed on the water by Bishop Roger, bringing the celebration to a close.
