Reflections & Documentary questions (250-500 word answer required for each question):
Please Note: Your answers will be reviewed by a member of the DST - your answer may be shared with your Archdeacon if further support needs are identified.
- What do you think of when you hear the word ‘safeguarding’? If you can, please link your reflections to Psalm 91.
- Think about your own church / cathedral situation: What evidence would your church / cathedral point to in order to demonstrate that it understands what “good safeguarding culture and arrangements” look like?
- What are the attributes of a ‘good’ and effective safeguarding leader, and why do you think this?
- What do you think about when you hear the word victim/survivor? What is your understanding of the impact of abuse in a church context on victims and survivors? How does this understand shape your leadership values, beliefs and behaviour in respect of safeguarding?
- Please share your reflections following your viewing of the documentary 'The Church's Darkest Secret': (Please note, that if you were not able to watch this documentary, please record NA)
- Please write a reflection about a scenario in which you have applied the learning from this course or how you plan to implement your learning from this course.
- The documentary 'The Church's Darkest Secret' can be found and viewed via the Church of England Training Portal: https://safeguardingtraining.cofeportal.org/
- If you have completed any of the e-learning provided by the Church of England you may already have an account – otherwise please create an account.
- You can then find the documentary under the ‘additional resources’ and ‘BBC2 Documentary’ – the enrolment key that is required is Leadership+
- Do remember that the reflection regarding the documentary is optional as we appreciate that the content may be difficult for some participants.

Please note in your diary!
It is your responsibility to remember to book yourself onto the relevant level of safeguarding training every 3 years:
Refresher learning should be completed at a three-yearly interval and will keep knowledge and skills up to date. It is expected that everyone will have been trained to the required level within each three-yearly cycle. Refresher learning should be undertaken at the highest required level (as per safeguarding training in the statutory sector) – Church of England SAFEGUARDING Learning & development Framework 2021
- All office holders are expected to participate in safeguarding and refresher training. Failure to do so may give rise to disciplinary action under the Clergy Discipline Measure. (page 26, Diocese of Chelmsford: A Handbook for Ecclesiastical Office Holders)
- The clergy are required to have appropriate and current training in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Failure to participate may result in action being taken under the Clergy Discipline Measure. (section 2.11, page 4, Church of England: Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy)
- Ministry in retirement is subject to the bishop granting a Licence or Permission To Officiate, and subject to the completion of safeguarding clearance and training. (section 6.7, page 10, Church of England: Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy)
ALL those holding a Bishop’s Licence, Commission or Authorisation are also REQUIRED to complete Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse (online), every 3 years. This course has replaced S3 'Responding to domestic abuse'.
IF you are also a line manager or involved in the recruitment of Church Officers* (employees, elected members, and volunteers) you will also need to complete Safer Recruitment and People Management (online),
