Beating of the Bounds on Rogation Sunday
St Mary’s Church, Maldon, marked the ancient Christian tradition of Rogation Sunday with a joyful and prayerful “Beating of the Bounds” procession through parts of the town and along the Hythe - a picturesque maritime port and waterfront area in Maldon. Led by Fr Andrew Appiah, members of the congregation gathered to give thanks to God for the land, rivers, wildlife, and the wider community.
Reflecting on the day, Fr Andrew said:
"Rogation Sunday, traditionally observed in the weeks before Ascension Day, has long been associated with praying for God’s blessing upon agriculture, crops, creation, and local communities. During the walk, prayers were offered for Maldon, its people, farmers, families, and all who care for the environment and waterways. We spoke of the importance of reconnecting with creation and giving thanks for the beauty and provision of God’s world.
"The procession concluded at the amphitheatre in Promenade Park in Maldon, with an uplifting Songs of Praise service. Many people attended, and passers-by stopped to listen and join in singing some of the nation’s best-loved hymns. A highlight of the afternoon was the enthusiastic singing of “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” which drew smiles and participation from visitors enjoying the park. Families, walkers, and tourists paused to take part in the celebration, creating a warm sense of community and shared worship. It was also an honour for St Mary’s to welcome the Mayor of Maldon, John Driver and the Mayoress, who joined the celebrations and community prayers during the afternoon."
