Chelmsford Diocese Churches host General Election Hustings Meetings

24 June 2024

As the 4 July General Election fast approaches, Chelmsford Diocese Churches have been hosting hustings meetings to provide an opportunity for people to meet and question their local parliamentary candidates.

At St Andrew's Melbourne Avenue, Chelmsford, the Rev Dan Pierce chaired a Churches Together Hustings with candidates for the Chelmsford Constituency. Commenting on Facebook, the Church said:

"Grateful to have hosted the Hustings last night, with over 100 people in attendance.

"Thanks to all those that came and those that submitted questions before hand, including those that got to ask them from the floor too. Thanks to the candidates that contributed to a lively and generous debate.

"It's been important for us to engage as a community as we ask those questions of our leaders, considering how we might play our part, and as people of faith how we might also #PrayOurPart."

At Dedham Parish Church, the Rev Philip Young chaired a hustings for the Harwich and North Essex Constituency. Approximately 80 members of the public attended along with five parliamentary candidates. The Rev Paul Greenland who organised the event said:

“The hustings was conducted in a spirit of respectful debate, and five topics of interest on local and national matters were discussed, together with  the candidates’ opening and closing statements, and contributions  from some of the public who attended. The candidates have been assured that the prayers of the Harwich Deanery of Churches will be for whoever is elected as the MP for the Harwich and North Essex Constituency, as they represent our communities.”
