On the first weekend of October, the Diocese of Chelmsford Deaf Ministry Team held a retreat at the Diocesan House of Retreat at Pleshey. Those attending included members of Colchester Deaf Church and Southend Deaf Church.
The weekend was organised by the Rev Stephanie Gillingham, our Diocesan Deaf Church minister. Stephanie takes up the story:
"The focus of the weekend was Change, something many of us find challenging. Our Visitor, Archdeacon Ruth Patten (Colchester) led our thoughts on the topic, giving us plenty of time to reflect, with images that encouraged us to deepen our thoughts, and consider God's hand in the changes in our lives.
"We had fun with the very moving story of Peter walking on water. We pulled together a boat out of tables and chairs and took turns to reenact the story, taking on the role of different characters. How did we feel being Peter or Jesus, or one of the disciples feeling seasick on the boat?
"There was also time for crafting and drawing, walking and chatting, and then opportunities to play games together.
"What a gift we have in such a beautiful and picturesque Retreat House, and what a gift to have each other, all able to communicate well together in British Sign Language and English.
"Thank you all for making it so special, and thanks to Archdeacon Ruth and Diana."
Robert a retreat participant said:
"This weekend was fantastic. The room was excellent. Doing the artwork was amazing. The best thing was making the banner together. I was really sad to leave and go home."
Sue, who was also a participant said:
"I liked the visual aspects of the talks as they helped deepen my understanding."
