Area Dean for Braintree and Incumbent of St Mary's, Bocking and Panfield, the Rev Canon Rod Reid, writes about his efforts to raise funds for Mid and North East Essex Mind on World Mental Health Day.
Last Thursday, 10th October was World Mental Health Day.
To raise awareness and all important funds I had agreed to take on a Firewalk on behalf of Mid and North East Essex MIND. I have worked increasingly with the charity over the last year, not least on providing mental health training and resources here in our patch.
I am sure many of us, too many of us, have had conversations regarding Mental Health, but we can feel unsupported and not sure where to signpost people. Mid and North East Essex MIND offer so much here in our Diocese from mental health toolkits for all, specific training for supporting Men's mental health, as well as peer and discussion groups to name a few things. There is so much support and hope in working towards good mental health, and a feeling that no one is alone.
So I took on the hot coals to raise awareness and funds for this amazing charity.
The experience itself was incredible! After a briefing/pep talk we were ready to take on the firewalk. No tricks, no cheating, the coals were at 700 degrees fahrenheit, be in no doubt, it really is walking on fire! Just before my turn the coals had cooled, so more paraffin was added, back over 700 degrees again! That said, I did it! Mind over matter is exactly the phrase to use.
It isn't for everyone, but if you fancy a go, there is another Firewalk at Beth Chatto Gardens on 6 November. Alternatively, you could sponsor me in my fundraising efforts.
I know many will read this and think I must do that, but then forget. Please do sponsor, monies raised make a big difference, not least as each regional branch of MIND raises its own funds.
So to friends and colleagues in the Diocese, please do contribute if you possibly can, link below.
