Shirley Biro awarded a British Empire Medal

Congratulations to Shirley Biro, who was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the King's Birthday Honours.

Shirley who has served as Newham Deanery Lay Chair for more than twenty years received the award for services to the Community of Newham. She has also served as a Pastoral Assistant in East Ham and as a Governor of the NHS East London Foundation Trust (ELFT).

According to her citation:

"Shirley's work has helped to raise the profile of ELFT and to win the Council of Governors' support of the trust's shift from a service provider to a population health-based approach."

Bishop Guli, Archdeacon Elwin and Bishop Lynne all congratulated Shirley on her award on social media, Bishop Lynne said: 

"This is such a well deserved honour. Congratulations Shirley Biro and thank you for your modelling of wise, faithful, Christian leadership in the role of Newham Lay Chair. It’s a delight and a privilege to serve in the Barking area alongside you."
