St Barnabas, Little Ilford help recreate walk that founded the charity Crisis

7 October 2024

In 1967 Bill Shearman, the founder of the charity Crisis, organised a walk to end homelessness in London. This walk is what started Crisis and on Saturday 5 October 2025, it was recreated for the first time to raise funds to tackle homelessness today.

Just as they did 57 years ago, the walkers began at St Barnabas, Little Ilford. The late Reverend Nick Beacock was a curate at St Barnabas in 1967 and was approached by Bill Shearman to become the first Chair of Crisis. Nick went on to become a tenacious housing campaigner whose decades of work with Crisis and the charity Shelter led to improvements in the lives of homeless people.

The walk was organised by the London Volunteer Group. If you would like to make a donation to Crisis, you can do so here.
