Journey to Mars in October at Chelmsford Cathedral

24 September 2025

Marvel at the spectacle of the red planet as Luke Jerram’s Mars: War and Peace is coming to Chelmsford Cathedral from 21 October – 12 November 2025.

This incredible artwork, suspended from the Nave, follows the success of Gaia in 2022, which drew record numbers to the Cathedral.

Crafted from detailed NASA imagery, Jerram’s artwork measures six metres in diameter with every valley, crater, volcano and mountain laid bare for inspection on the Martian surface.

But this isn’t just an art exhibition; it’s a conversation. It’s a call to contemplate our place in the universe and our responsibilities to each other on Earth. Alongside the artwork a curated and thoughtful program of events complement the installation. You can witness Roger Sayer, the original organist for the film Interstellar, perform live, or enjoy an evening of “Bowie by Candlelight” playing classics like Starman and Life on Mars.

There are also a selection of Keene Lectures taking place on the theme of War and Peace and a talk with stargazer, as well as novelist, Sarah Perry. Families and children’s activities include a mass for peace, alongside a school’s programme and visitors will also be able to use the interactive reflection wall where you can share your own thoughts, ensuring there is a way for everyone to connect with the exhibition’s powerful message during the three weeks.

Commenting on the Mars installation, The Dean of Chelmsford, the Very, Revd Dr Jessica Martin said:

“As we enter our conversation about our responsibilities to each other, under the planet traditionally associated with war, we particularly ponder our Christian commitment to peace with justice in a world where global instability and the waging of war become a normal part of international negotiations.

“How may we as Christians, speak into the urgencies of our time in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace?”
