Training resources for Churchwardens

This set of materials that can be used to provide training on a number of topics for Churchwardens.

This set of materials that can be used to provide training on a number of topics for Churchwardens. There are six sessions in total, the first session is designed to help explain the role of a churchwarden and could be used in the months before the Annual Meeting, when people might be thinking about taking up this role. The other five sessions provide information on the roles of the Churchwarden: being an Officer of the Bishop, being a partner and support to the clergy, being a leading member of the PCC, being a spiritual leader and lastly, the responsibilities during a ministerial vacancy.

The resources can be used by individuals or in a group, with someone facilitating the session.

For each session there is a:

  • A PowerPoint presentation, which could be used in a training session. It lasts for about 90 minutes, including time for discussion,
  • A guide for anyone using the presentation, both face2face and online,
  • A script to accompany the presentation, which also provides further information on the topic,
  • A handout for those attending the training.

There are also some videos of Churchwardens talking about their experiences.

Care for the building, faculty applications, churchyards, safe-guarding and health and safety are some of the topics covered.

Session 5: Lay leaders in worship and mission

The Churchwardens can set an example in their own Christian discipleship and in public worship. This session looks at ways to do this and the authority that Churchwardens have to lead worship.

Session 6: Responsibilities during a ministerial vacancy

After the departure of the Incumbent (vicar/pries-in-charge) the Churchwardens, with the Area Dean, hold responsibility for the parish. This session covers the role of the sequestrator, the responsibilities in worship, Annual Parochial Meetings and in the appointment of a successor.
