Congratulations to our new priests

1 October 2022

Congratulations to our 24 new priests, who were ordained at five services across East London and Essex on Saturday 1 October.

Our new priests are pictured above at their pre-ordination retreat at the Diocesan Retreat House, Pleshey (front row L-R) with the Right Reverend Roger Morris, the Bishop of Colchester, the Right Reverend Lynne Cullens, the Bishop of Barking, the Right Reverend Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, the Bishop of Chelmsford, the Right Reverend Dr John Perumbalath, the Bishop of Bradwell and our Diocesan Director of Ordinands, the Revd Tim Goodbody.

When someone is first ordained, they become a deacon. Whilst some deacons are called to a vocation as a distinctive deacon, most deacons are ordained as a priest after a year. The ministry of a priest is one of leadership and mission, helping all Christians to realise their potential as they witness to Christ. They help to build up the Church, through:

  • the celebration of the sacraments (including baptism and holy communion)
  • teaching
  • preaching
  • pastoral care
